Over €800,000 earmarked to upgrade Gran Tarajal port's electrical system
Sampol Ingeniería y Obras, S.A. will carry out the works, awarded by Puertos Canarios, aimed at improving the quality of the power supply and ensuring the operability of the port infrastructure.
The Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Canary Islands Government, through the public‑enterprise entity Puertos Canarios, led by Gilberto Moreno, has awarded the contract to execute the low‑voltage electrical installation upgrade at Gran Tarajal port in the municipality of Tuineje (Fuerteventura) for a total amount of €802,017.
Sampol Ingeniería y Obras, S.A. will undertake the works, with an estimated execution period of four months. The intervention will improve the quality of the electricity supply and guarantee the operability of the port infrastructure, which in recent years has suffered interruptions affecting street lighting, port facilities, and the electrical provisioning of vessels.
“The modernization of Gran Tarajal’s electrical system was a priority, and with it we reinforce the reliability of a port that is essential for the economic and fishing activity of southern Fuerteventura,” said José Gilberto Moreno, Managing Director of Puertos Canarios.
The actions include drafting and executing a low‑voltage electrical project that complies with current regulations, as well as increasing the contracted power to ensure proper port functioning. This renewal responds to growing energy demand and the need to keep port services operational at the strategically important Gran Tarajal port, which is vital for maritime connectivity and the economic development of Tuineje.
With these improvements, the Canary Islands Executive aims to modernize the entire port’s electrical installation, increase power capacity, and align it with the Low‑Voltage Electrotechnical Regulations, thereby ensuring a more efficient, safe, and up‑to‑date operation of the port facilities.
