Pájara denounces loss of Patronate grant for Sotavento World Cup

The municipal government calls it “incomprehensible” that €250,000 was withdrawn without prior notice.

Municipal reaction

The City Council has issued a statement demanding that the Tourism Minister restore the €250,000 earmarked for the event and warning that it will take all necessary measures to ensure the competition can proceed with the financial resources it requires.

The governing coalition of the Pájara City Council, formed by the PSOE and CC, lodged a formal complaint with the Fuerteventura Island Council after discovering that the €250,000 budget line allocated to the World Windsurf and Wingfoil Championship had been removed.

“It is incomprehensible that the Tourism Patronage withdrew this nominated subsidy without any prior warning, jeopardising an elite competition that is not only an international sporting benchmark but also the main driver of external promotion and economic dynamism for the island’s small and medium‑sized enterprises during the summer,” the council said.

Appeal to the Tourism Council

The disappearance of the funding and the lack of explanations prompted the municipality to send a letter to the Island Council’s Tourism Minister, Marlene Figueroa, requesting clarification of the decision and demanding that the island authority guarantee its financial contribution.

Commitment to promotion

The City Council affirms its support for all promotional activities—both domestic and abroad—held in Fuerteventura and any municipality on the island. However, the governing coalition stresses that it is non‑negotiable to reduce the financial resources earmarked for the championship.

Concern over budget omission

Municipal representatives also find it alarming that the Windsurf and Wingfoil Championship does not appear as a named item in the budget management. If the necessary funding for the championship—historically consolidated over its 37‑year history—is not secured, the council will seek and apply all necessary means to ensure the event can be carried out with the economic support it needs.
