People's Party slams 1.5‑year delay in Fuerteventura transport tender

The Popular Party (PP) of Fuerteventura has submitted a written question to the island council to ascertain the current status of the new tender document for the public transport service, after observing that, a year and a half after the deadline announced by the island government, the file remains unpublished.

“The Canarian Coalition and the PSOE pledged to put the contract out to tender in the first quarter of 2024, yet a year and a half has passed with no news,” said PP spokesperson Claudio Gutiérrez. “Not only have they failed to deliver, but the service continues to deteriorate, with buses in poor condition and constant incidents that affect the daily lives of many islanders.”

The PP warns that the situation is unsustainable, criticizing practices such as some vehicles “closing the doors with a rope,” which highlights the service’s decay and lack of maintenance.

“Fuerteventura cannot continue with a third‑category public transport system designed for an island that no longer exists. Citizens deserve a modern, efficient system that guarantees safe mobility,” Gutiérrez added.

The party recalls that Transport Minister Luis González announced in 2024 the progressive introduction of new vehicles and three electric buses financed with European funds. However, the PP argues these measures are merely “band‑aid solutions” that do not address the underlying problem, and they demand speed and transparency in processing the new contract.

“Fuerteventura needs a dignified public transport service adapted to its current reality. We cannot keep waiting while residents suffer the consequences of political inaction,” concluded the PP spokesperson.
