PFAE Students Kick Off Home-Based Social and Health Care Services in Fuerteventura
The trainee‑workers of the Alternating Training Programme with Youth Guarantee Employment (PFAE GJ) “Fuerteventura Cares for You at Home” have begun providing home‑based socio‑health care services, improving assistance for people in dependent situations across several points of the island.
After completing two Level‑2 professional certification courses and starting interventions in social institutions dependent on the island corporation, the students are now expanding their scope to direct care in private homes. The new service is being rolled out in the municipalities of Pájara, Betancuria, Antigua and Puerto del Rosario, thanks to coordination between the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the respective town councils.
The programme involves 15 unemployed young people. According to the Cabildo’s president, Lola García, home care allows the trainees to apply their newly acquired knowledge in real‑world settings, offering personal and socio‑health support to individuals with physical, mental and social needs, directly in their homes and tailored to each user’s characteristics.
“Home‑based care lets our students put theory into practice, providing essential personal and health assistance while respecting the specific needs of each household,” – Lola García, President of the Cabildo.
The intervention focuses on promoting personal autonomy and well‑being, enabling cared‑for individuals to remain in their family environment and enhancing their quality of life through actions adapted to each individual and social situation. Users are referred by the Cabildo’s Social Affairs Department, strengthening support for dependent persons and the island’s most vulnerable population.
Nuria Cabrera, the Councillor for Employment Promotion, highlighted the project’s social impact:
“This initiative represents a real job‑insertion opportunity for the participating youth, combining specialised training with practical experience in an essential community service.”
Socio‑Health Resources in Island Centres
In parallel, the PFAE GJ “Fuerteventura Cares for You at Home” continues to provide services in several island social institutions, including:
- Day Centre for Severe Disability in Puerto del Rosario
- Island Residence for Severe Disability in Fuerteventura
- Josefina Pla Day‑Stay Socio‑Health Centre for dependent persons
Through these activities, the programme supports island‑wide socio‑health resources by applying strategies and procedures aimed at maintaining and improving personal autonomy, fostering relationships with users’ environments, and contributing to overall well‑being across Fuerteventura.
