Pozo Negro Airport Segment to Be Tendered by Year‑End for €215 Million
Councillor Pablo Rodríguez explained in the plenary session of the Canary Islands Parliament the plans for this highly demanded road on the island.
Parliamentary deputy Jana González Alonso of the Canarian Nationalist Party (CCa) intervened in the Canary Islands Parliament to demand that the Airport‑Pozo Negro stretch, part of Fuerteventura’s north‑south axis, be put out to tender.
The work has been included in the Canary Islands Government’s road agreement since 1994. In the three decades since then, Fuerteventura’s population has almost tripled, rising from 50,000 to 127,000 inhabitants.
González recalled that, during the Public Works Commission meeting on 9 May, officials reported progress on the project. At that time the section was awaiting two reports: an environmental supervision report from the Canary Islands Ministry of Ecological Transition and a hydrological supervision report from the Fuerteventura Water Consortium. Both issues have now been resolved.
The same commission announced that the tender for the work would be launched during the current year. In this context, González asked for an update on the status of the procedures and the expected timelines for execution.
“It is a real need to de‑congest traffic in the entry and exit area of Puerto del Rosario heading south,” she emphasized.
In response, the area’s responsible councillor, Pablo Rodríguez Valido, pledged to the deputy that the Airport‑Pozo Negro project will appear on the procurement platform before 31 December of this year. He also highlighted that this will be the largest road‑related public works contract in Fuerteventura’s history, with a value of €215 million.
