PP accuses Cabildo of missing 2024 Court of Auditors deadlines

Popular spokesperson Claudio Gutiérrez warns of possible liabilities for the island government and of the consequences of failing to submit the accounts on time: a 2 % withholding of autonomous‑community transfers.

The Popular Group in the Fuerteventura Cabildo has publicly denounced, in a press release, a breach allegedly committed by the CC‑PSOE island government for not respecting the legal deadlines for sending the documentation related to the audit of the 2024 General Accounts to the Audiencia de Cuentas of the Canary Islands.

According to the statement, the Plenary of the Audiencia de Cuentas adopted, on 17 December 2025, a resolution (registered under entry 26/2151 on 23 January 2026) indicating that the Cabildo of Fuerteventura failed to forward the documentation concerning the “Audit of the General Accounts of the Island Cabildos, 2024,” which should have been submitted to the Parliament of the Canary Islands in compliance with Law 4/1989 of 2 May.

“The situation is extremely concerning,” said Popular spokesperson Claudio Gutiérrez. “It is not a simple administrative delay, but a formal breach flagged by the Canary Islands audit body, which can entail liabilities and the withholding of two percent of the autonomous‑community transfers charged to the regional budget, and, above all, projects an image of institutional disorder and irresponsibility.”

The press release recalls that Law 4/1989, in its article 14, provides that in cases of non‑cooperation or missed deadlines, the Audiencia de Cuentas may:

  • request the entity again,
  • propose the imposition of responsibilities,
  • and even communicate the breach to the corresponding governing bodies.

“We are talking about a serious warning, not a mere recommendation,” Gutiérrez added.

The Popular Party links this incident to what it describes as a broader pattern of economic mismanagement, claiming the Cabildo has already breached spending rules and budgetary stability.

“We are facing a pattern of economic management based on improvisation, which is causing serious consequences for Fuerteventura’s major challenges in housing, water and transport. One example is the inability to use the surplus, even though the Spanish Government has allowed compliant administrations to do so. Unfortunately, that is not the case for Fuerteventura,” the spokesperson asserted.

The PP maintains that timely and proper accountability is an essential duty of any public administration.

“Anyone who fails to undergo external audit, who does not respect legal deadlines, and who disregards basic fiscal rules, loses the moral authority to speak of good governance,” Gutiérrez concluded.

The statement also references similar incidents in 2021 and 2023, tying them to previous island‑government terms. Finally, the Popular Group calls for greater diligence in economic management, tighter control of current spending, and full compliance with the Audiencia de Cuentas’ requirements, urging the approval of the 2024 General Account.
