PP seeks Cabildo compensation to cut Puerto del Rosario rubbish charges
Puerto del Rosario’s PP wants compensation for hosting Fuerteventura’s waste plant included in the 2027 budget to help cut rubbish bills.
The Partido Popular (PP) in Puerto del Rosario has renewed its call for compensation from Fuerteventura’s Cabildo. The party says the payment could help cut rubbish charges for households, self-employed workers and small businesses.
Onda Fuerteventura reported the proposal on 30 October 2026. Under the plan, the island council would pay Puerto del Rosario for hosting the waste treatment plant. The plant serves the whole of Fuerteventura. The PP wants the payment included in the council’s 2027 budget.
This is a political proposal, not an approved cut in rubbish bills. The report gives no confirmed figure for how much individual charges could fall.
What the PP is asking for
The party says Puerto del Rosario faces €1.5 million in waste management costs in 2026. It argues that a payment from the Cabildo would ease pressure on council funds and allow charges to fall.
PP council spokesperson Ana Padilla called on the mayor to negotiate with the Cabildo. She said limited discounts for some taxpayers were no substitute for a broader, lasting way to cut service costs.
The party wants an annual compensation scheme because Puerto del Rosario hosts facilities that serve the whole island.
A renewed call for the 2027 budget
The PP said it had put forward an amendment while the council was preparing its 2026 budget. The amendment sought compensation for the €1.5 million the council was due to pay the Cabildo. The party said the governing CC–PSOE coalition had rejected it.
As work begins on the 2027 budget, the PP is asking for its proposal to be considered again. It also criticised how the governing coalition had handled the rules on rubbish charges. The party alleged that a lack of planning had preceded the passing of higher costs on to taxpayers.
The source report includes no response from the local government or the Cabildo. It also gives no commitment to introduce compensation.
