PP urges Cabildo to declare housing emergency in Fuerteventura and build public homes

The Popular Party of Fuerteventura has called on the island’s Cabildo to declare a housing emergency and to take an active role in constructing public housing, aiming to address the growing difficulty residents face in securing a home.

The initiative is part of the so‑called “Plan Vive Fuerteventura,” presented by the PP’s island leaders, who argue that the current real‑estate market situation demands extraordinary measures and direct involvement from the island’s governing body.

According to the party, the sustained rise in rental prices and the limited supply of housing have placed increasing pressure on families, young people and workers who cannot afford decent accommodation. In this context, the PP maintains that declaring a housing emergency would streamline administrative procedures and shorten the timelines for residential projects.

Among the proposals included in the plan, the PP suggests that the Cabildo use publicly owned land to promote protected housing, especially in areas where urban development capacity exists. It also proposes allocating funds from the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) to boost public housing projects and to explore public‑private collaboration models that keep final prices under control.

The initiative further calls for agreements with professional associations to accelerate the issuance of technical reports and reduce licensing times, with the goal of energizing new construction.

The PP’s spokesperson in the Cabildo announced that the party will bring the proposal to the full council, aiming to spark an institutional debate on the role the island corporation should play in housing policy.

The PP asserts that housing has become one of Fuerteventura’s main structural challenges and requires a coordinated, swift, and well‑resourced response to guarantee the right to decent housing for all residents.
