PP warns of rising crime in Fuerteventura and calls for police reinforcements

The Popular Party (PP) of Fuerteventura has voiced concern over the latest crime figures released by the Ministry of the Interior. According to a statement from the party, the data show a significant increase in criminal offenses on the island during the first half of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024.

Island‑wide figures

  • Conventional crime rose 16.45 %, from 2,918 to 3,398 cases.
  • Thefts jumped 37.82 %, from 833 to 1,148 incidents.
  • Overall criminal offenses increased 11.39 %, from 3,539 to 3,942 cases.

Situation in La Oliva

  • Conventional crime surged 29.99 %, from 747 to 971 cases.
  • Thefts grew 30.65 %, from 310 to 405 incidents.
  • Total criminal offenses climbed 20.5 %, from 873 to 1,052 cases.

“Our municipality is experiencing a worrying rise in crime. The Popular Party demands more human and material resources to reach the staffing ratios we have established for our population, as we are suffering a notable personnel deficit on the island,” warned José Vicente Calero, PP spokesperson in La Oliva.

The PP notes that police unions and associations have been requesting, since 2021, the addition of 80–100 Civil Guard officers and about 30 National Police officers for Fuerteventura, yet no substantial progress has been made. Consequently, the party calls on the central government for immediate measures, increased police presence in high‑traffic areas, and greater resources for the State Security Forces and Corps.

While the PP welcomes the creation of a Civil Guard commander’s post on the island, it criticises the timing of the announcement, which followed a meeting at the State Island Directorate attended exclusively by PSOE representatives.

“This is an exploitation of institutions that belong to all Spaniards in service to ‘sanchismo’; an unprecedented announcement aimed at promoting island and municipal candidates,” the party declared.

The Popular Party stresses that public safety must be a priority on a tourist island like Fuerteventura, requiring security plans that address not only the resident population but also the fluctuating tourist influx.

“We reiterate that the Government Delegation is not the PSOE headquarters on the island,” the PP concluded.
