Pre‑alert: Calima dust haze incoming

The Canary Islands’ Directorate General of Emergencies has issued a pre‑alert for calima affecting Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the highlands, east, south and west of Gran Canaria, effective from 18:00 h on Saturday, 6 September.

According to the regional government, this decision is based on information provided by the State Meteorological Agency and other available sources, and is made under the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

The forecast anticipates a probable calima at higher altitudes, with variable intensity, while not ruling out its presence at mid‑level or coastal zones.

The phenomenon could reduce visibility and may trigger or worsen health problems for people with chronic and/or respiratory illnesses.
