President García allocates €35.7 million to expand social‑healthcare slots in Fuerteventura

The island corporation signed today the dependency agreement 2025‑2028 with the Government of the Canary Islands

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has signed the 2025‑2028 dependency agreement with the Government of the Canary Islands. The funding amounts to €35.7 million across the different years, with the aim of reaching 589 sociosanitary places for seniors, dependent persons and people with disabilities within that horizon.

Under the agreement, the Cabildo contributes €9.2 million for the 2025‑2028 period, while the Autonomous Community adds €26.4 million.

For the 2026 fiscal year, €9,414,136.17 will be allocated, allowing the island to increase its capacity from 300 to 442 places. This was announced by island president Lola García and Social Action minister Víctor Alonso during the signing ceremony in Gran Canaria with the Regional Ministry of Social Welfare, headed by Candelaria Delgado.

“Caring for people is one of our top priorities. For this reason, we have planned the places our island needs for those who require them,” García said. “This financing will raise the current 300 places to 442 across the various resources Fuerteventura already has, and we continue to add places derived from new resources that are being launched thanks to coordination with the municipalities.”

Víctor Alonso explained that the increase of 142 places will mainly come through the Personal Autonomy Promotion Service, already awarded via a social concert and receiving €900,000 for this year. The service will provide home care for 134 dependent individuals, staffed by coordinators, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, geriatric caregivers, and senior activity‑animation technicians.

The Cabildo also operates facilities such as the Residence and Day Center of Puerto del Rosario, Centro Josefina Plá, Island Residence for Persons with Disabilities, Occupational Center of Puerto del Rosario, Occupational Center for Persons with Disabilities in Gran Tarajal, the Tutored Accommodation Program for Mental Health, the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center of Puerto del Rosario, and the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center of Gran Tarajal. A new Island Residence for Mental Health is slated to open soon.

In addition, the Cabildo is constructing the Residence and Day Center for Seniors in Gran Tarajal, which will add 90 more places, and is coordinating the creation of a Day Center for Seniors in Costa Calma with 30 additional sociosanitary places, as well as similar provisions for the Antigua‑Betancuria area.
