Primero Canarias kicks off outreach in Fuerteventura for the

Municipalists meet with Asamblea Majorera, AMF, Alternativa por Antigua, Unidos por Betancuria, Juntos por Pájara and independents from La Oliva

Primero Canarias municipalists, the political force driven by mayors, leaders and renewing militants of progressive nationalism, began this Saturday in Fuerteventura its round of contacts for the formation of the Canary Unity Table, its proposal to unite all grassroots Canary political formations ahead of the upcoming general elections, according to nortedegrancanaria.com.

Teodoro Sosa, Vanesa Martín, Samuel Henríquez and the organization’s president, Óscar Hernández, met in Caleta de Fuste with representatives of Asamblea Majorera, the Municipal Assemblies of Fuerteventura, Alternativa Local por Antigua, Unidos por Betancuria, Juntos por Pájara and independents from La Oliva, with the aim of inviting them to participate in the future Canary political‑action unity project in Madrid and to contribute to the political manifesto defending the interests of the Canary Islands in the Congress and the Senate.

The meetings were held separately with Mario Cabrera and Natalia Évora of Asamblea Majorera; Juan Nicolás Cabrera, Sergio Lloret, Pedro Armas and Juan Cabrera of the Municipal Assemblies of Fuerteventura; Matías Peña and Samuel Torres of Alternativa Local por Antigua; Enrique Cerdeña and Marcelino Cerdeña of Unidos por Betancuria; Rafael Perdomo and Luis Pérez of Juntos por Pájara; and Marcelino Umpiérrez, a former independent councilor in La Oliva.

Due to scheduling conflicts of their representatives, despite the interest shown, meetings with other independent groups and formations such as Fuerteventura Avanza and Fuerteventura En Marcha were postponed to another occasion. In a second phase, Primero Canarias aims to bring all nationalist sensitivities of Fuerteventura to the same table, a goal that all parties were urged to pursue after the unanimously favorable disposition expressed by their respective spokespeople.

As a starting point for the discussions, the municipalists propose a manifesto for the unified action of Canary grassroots political forces in Madrid. The document states that in the current political scenario in Spain it is essential to articulate a unified, plural and transversal candidacy capable of bringing together organizations from different islands and varied political sensitivities in order to defend the interests of the Canary Islands in the General Courts.

“It is about cooperating to claim, with our own voice, the full recognition of the archipelago’s historic rights, consolidating the islands’ differential status and achieving the political, social and economic advances that the Canary people expect and deserve,” the statement reads.
