PSOE denounces plan to move adult students from a hallway into a basement.
The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura says in a press release that it has exposed the Canary Islands Government’s Department of Education for its poor management on the island. According to the socialists, the minister, Hipólito Suárez, tried to justify the indefensible in the plenary session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands: the Island Education Directorate plans to move students from the Adult Education Centre – Fuerteventura North – “from a hallway into a basement”.
“Few incidents illustrate better the terrible management of Education in Fuerteventura,” says Manuel Hernández, PSOE deputy for the island and the parliamentarian who questioned Minister Suárez. “Ignorance of the reality of Fuerteventura or sheer indifference calls into question Education’s ability to solve the many problems and shortcomings on our island.”
The students themselves have reported their situation: they are scattered across several shared buildings. The Department of Education described this arrangement as “temporary” in July 2024, yet it is still in place as 2026 approaches.
In what the PSOE calls a “shameful” policy of forward‑looking avoidance, the Island Education Directorate has proposed that the lessons currently held in hallways—due to the lack of proper classrooms—be moved to a basement. “Any suggestion, in the eyes of Education, seems more sensible than providing the Adult Education Centre – Fuerteventura North – with the facilities it deserves… and they are not the only victims of the island’s mismanaged education system,” the party added.
“This is not public education; it is fighting every day against adversity,” the socialist deputy told the Education Minister from the speaker’s podium, urging him to “provide a dignified space for these students that also complies with regulations.”
