Puerto del Rosario Boosts Waste Management Efforts
The Municipal Services Department has released the annual waste‑collection breakdown for the period August 2024 – August 2025, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental protection and proper handling of the municipality’s waste‑generated.
Vegetable Oil Collection Highlights
Among all the data, the collection of vegetable oil stands out positively. Proper treatment of this waste is crucial to prevent water and soil contamination. Over the past year, a total of 11,990 liters of vegetable oil have been processed.
To put this achievement into context, municipalities in Spain with a similar population (45,000‑50,000 inhabitants) typically collect between 8,000 kg and 12,000 kg of vegetable oil annually. Our 11,990 kg places Puerto del Rosario in the upper national range and above the Canary Islands average, underscoring the town’s leading environmental commitment.
Clean Point Risco Prieto
The council reminds residents that disposing of inappropriate waste in urban containers is strictly prohibited. For hazardous waste, such actions can constitute an environmental crime, with corresponding penalties.
The municipality’s Clean Point Risco Prieto (Aloe Street 37) is managed by the Waste Department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. Opening hours are:
- Monday – Saturday: 08:00 – 18:00
- Sunday: 09:00 – 14:00
At this facility, citizens can dispose of all types of special waste free of charge and responsibly.
Mayor’s Statement
“From the municipal government we place sustainability at the heart of our policies. Figures like the nearly 12,000 kg of vegetable oil correctly recycled are not just numbers; they reflect the commitment of a responsible citizenry and a council that provides the tools to build, together, a cleaner and more nature‑respectful Puerto del Rosario. Every liter of recycled oil is a firm step toward the green city we want to leave as a legacy.”
— David de Vera, Mayor of Puerto del Rosario
Municipal Services Councilor’s Statement
“Efficient waste management is a priority. The notable rise in vegetable‑oil collection encourages us to double our efforts in awareness campaigns. We urge all neighbours to keep using the vegetable‑oil collection points, the orange containers, and especially the Clean Point Risco Prieto for special waste. Throwing hazardous waste into the wrong container is not a minor infraction; it is an environmental crime that harms the whole community. With such wide and accessible hours at the Risco Prieto clean point, there is no excuse not to recycle correctly.”
— David de León, Councilor for Municipal Services
Call to Action
The Puerto del Rosario City Council reminds citizens of the importance of using the Clean Point and specific collection services, such as the thirty orange containers spread throughout the municipality for vegetable oil, to continue advancing sustainability and environmental stewardship.
