Puerto del Rosario exhibition highlights cancer research funding

The Conectando vidas exhibition is open at Puerto del Rosario’s Casa de la Cultura until 30 November, highlighting the role of funding in cancer research.

An exhibition at the Casa de la Cultura in Puerto del Rosario is highlighting the role of research funding in improving cancer treatment and survival. Organised by the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC), Conectando vidas is open until 30 November.

The initiative supports the association’s goal of achieving a cancer survival rate above 70% by 2030. Isabel Laucirica, president of the AECC’s Fuerteventura island branch, said the exhibition has already travelled to schools, healthcare centres, airports, town halls and cultural centres to reach as many people as possible.

Funding research in the Canary Islands

In 2025, the association allocated €500,000 to three research projects developed in the Canary Islands. The money came from Las Palmas province, including contributions from Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.

Laucirica said 20% of income from membership fees, fundraising activities, merchandise sales and donations goes directly towards scientific projects. Across Spain, she said, the association has invested more than €150 million in research projects involving more than 3,000 researchers.

She said the association aims to fund studies through to completion and places particular emphasis on tumours with a poorer prognosis or those that do not respond to available treatments. She highlighted research into some types of breast cancer and childhood leukaemia, saying that some work has led to clinical trials and new treatment possibilities.
