Puerto del Rosario library delayed to just a month and a half before the PAU
The capital of Fuerteventura currently lacks an operational municipal library in the afternoons or on weekends, a situation that affects students and other users in the weeks leading up to the University Entrance Exam (PAU).
Background
- The municipal library began a renovation announced by the City Council on 15 April 2025.
- The project was budgeted at €326,865 with an intended execution period of seven months.
- One year later, construction is still ongoing and the library is only open in the mornings, according to the opposition group Fuerteventura Avanza.
Impact on Students
“It is an incomprehensible situation,” says Peña Armas, spokesperson for Fuerteventura Avanza, noting that many students remain in class until 2 p.m. and therefore cannot use the library in the afternoons.
The delay coincides with the PAU, scheduled for 2, 3, 4 and 5 June, and the lack of adequate study spaces affects not only high‑school students but also university students and exam candidates.
Political Response
Fuerteventura Avanza has demanded that the governing coalition:
- Immediately open study spaces in the afternoons.
- Extend library services to weekends.
- Publish a clear timetable for the completion of the renovation.
“This is not about big headlines or empty promises. It is about guaranteeing a basic service. It is about not letting down a generation that is staking its future on a few weeks and all library users who can only use the facilities for a few hours a day,” concluded Armas.
