Puerto del Rosario PSOE calls resolution to dismantle El Charco plant a historic step
Senator for Fuerteventura, Paloma Hernández, highlights the coordination with the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to advance the renewal of the island’s electricity system, as well as the follow‑up work carried out before the State Secretariat and the meetings held in recent years on this line.
The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has announced the final resolution of the electricity tender that includes the dismantling of the El Charco power plant in Puerto del Rosario.
The PSOE of Puerto del Rosario regards this decision as a historic step that answers a long‑standing demand from the island’s citizens.
Senator for Fuerteventura Paloma Hernández emphasized the monitoring work performed before the State Secretariat and the meetings held over the past years to promote the renewal of the island’s power system. Within the framework of the new tender, the Ministry has awarded a total of 215 megawatts (MW) of new electric generation for the Lanzarote–Fuerteventura system.
According to Hernández, the addition of new generation units will guarantee electricity supply on the island, reinforce system security, and move toward greater diversification of operators. The ministerial decision is also based on the finding that the El Charco plant has reached the end of its useful life, ruling out any extension of the existing generating units.
From the socialist grouping, the announcement is seen as a firm advance toward the future dismantling of facilities deemed obsolete. They note that the Ministry has been working in parallel to boost renewable energy in Fuerteventura, with installations having doubled since 2018.
“After thirteen years of work and effort in collaboration with the Government of Spain, today Fuerteventura takes a decisive step. We, the majoreros, are celebrating because a historic demand is finally being met, marking a before‑and‑after in Fuerteventura’s electricity system,” the senator said.
The general secretary of the Local PSOE Group in Puerto del Rosario, Tacoremi Gutiérrez, described the news as “a historic fact” and assured that the Socialist Party will continue working to improve citizens’ quality of life and address their aspirations regarding sustainability and energy modernization.
With this announcement, a new phase begins for Fuerteventura’s electricity system, characterized by a transition toward a more diversified model adapted to current energy challenges.
