Puerto del Rosario revamps its historic centre with a unique, accessible platform

Puerto del Rosario unveiled today one of its most ambitious projects, aimed at revitalising the entire historic core of the municipality.

The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, the Canary Islands Government’s tourism minister, and the president of the Island Council presented an integrated renewal plan for the capital’s old town, with the goal of making the city “more accessible for all residents and visitors.”

Project Overview

The scheme proposes a comprehensive overhaul centred on the installation of a single, level platform that removes steps and physical barriers for pedestrians, promoting a friendlier urban model that prioritises foot traffic.

  • The platform will cover roughly 8,000 m².
  • It will create a continuous pedestrian zone stretching from Avenida Marítima to Plaza de la Paz, unifying the historic area’s image and spurring its revitalisation.

The intervention is divided into two zones.

“Our aim is to make the city more accessible for all the neighbours and the people who visit us.” – Mayor of Puerto del Rosario

Zone A

Zone A will encompass the surroundings of the municipal market, beginning at Avenida Marítima and including several central streets as well as the pedestrianised Primero de Mayo avenue.

Zone B

Zone B will cover various streets of the old town, such as Avenida Marítima, Comandante Franco, Doctor Mena, Orchilla, and Ayoze, among others. In this area, pedestrianisation or shared‑use will be achieved through circular platforms.

Funding and Timeline

  • The project is a joint effort of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Fuerteventura Island Council.
  • Total investment: €2.2 million, with over €900,000 contributed by the Tourism Ministry.

Construction is slated to begin before 30 June 2026 and is expected to be completed in approximately nine months.
