Puerto unlocks rental assistance for young people
The Puerto del Rosario City Council will be able to continue processing the “Rental Deposit Aid for Young People up to 35 years old” now that the Vice‑Council for Treasury and Relations with the European Union of the Canary Islands Government has fully approved the request previously submitted by the council.
In a statement, the council announced that this new resolution overturns the earlier unfavorable financial‑sustainability report and issues a favorable one instead, allowing the housing‑access program for young people to move forward. The decision also cancels previously imposed measures on the municipality, including the requirement to adopt a credit‑non‑availability agreement and the obligation to draft a new Economic‑Financial Plan for the 2026‑2027 period.
Financial Solvency and Compliance with Fiscal Rules
“Our only goal was to defend the autonomy of this City Council and, above all, the interests of our residents, especially the youngest who need support to access housing,” said Mayor David de Vera, praising the resolution as the result of institutional collaboration.
According to Councilor for Economy and Treasury Juan Manuel Verdugo, the 2026 budget already meets stability targets and the spending‑rule requirements. He added that the 2025 accounting imbalance was “a one‑off, extraordinary situation stemming from the payment of an inherited court judgment, not a structural problem.” In his view, the new resolution “validates our rigorous management and the excellent health of the municipal coffers, which enjoy a substantial treasury surplus and zero debt.”
Housing Councilor Toñi Fernández highlighted that the decision unlocks “a vital line of aid for our young people,” and announced that the call for applications will be published soon.
With the favorable ruling, the City Council said it will immediately proceed with the paperwork to launch the aid program, aimed at facilitating the emancipation and life projects of the municipality’s youth.
