Rare Earths in Fuerteventura: Their Origin and Importance, Central to Geolodía

Geolodía Fuerteventura 2026 will focus its next edition on the study of so‑called rare earth elements, found in some of the island’s oldest rocks. The scientific outreach day is scheduled for May 10, featuring a guided itinerary between Ajuy and the Caleta de la Cruz on the western coast of Fuerteventura.

During the walk, participants will be introduced to minerals such as pyroxenites, ijolites, sienites, and carbonatites, and will learn about their origin and evolution within the island’s geological history.

The event, organized annually by the island’s Cabildo, will be led by geologists Juan Miguel Torres, María Candelaria Martín, Margarita Jambrina, and Ramón Casillas. They will help interpret the rock formations and their geological context, presenting the material in an accessible way for all audiences.

The activity, under the motto “Geology Meets the Challenge of Inclusion,” will start at 09:00 h at the Puerto del Rosario bus station, where participants will be transported by bus to Ajuy. From there, a seven‑kilometre hike will lead to the Caleta de la Cruz, concluding around 15:00 h. Some sections are demanding, so prospective walkers are advised to check the difficulty level with the organizers in advance.

Registration for Geolodía 2026

Participation is free but limited. Registration must be completed in advance on the Cabildo de Fuerteventura website. The application window runs from May 2 to May 7, starting at 08:00 h and closing once capacity is reached.

Observing the Landscape with a Geological Lens

“The educational and outreach value of this day lies in inviting people to look at their surroundings with geological eyes, to understand the processes that shape the Earth, and to become aware of the importance of the work of geologists,” – Lola García, President of the Cabildo, in an official statement.

“This initiative lets citizens step into the geologists’ natural laboratory, appreciate the island’s geological heritage, and understand its significance,” – Carlos Rodríguez, Environmental Counselor of the Cabildo.

Geolodía: A National Geological Outreach Initiative from Fuerteventura

Geolodía is Spain’s premier annual geological outreach event, coordinated by the Geological Society of Spain (SGE). It takes place simultaneously across more than 50 locations nationwide, offering free excursions that aim to:

  • Bring geology closer to the public,
  • Highlight its relevance for natural resources, geological hazards, and land‑use planning,
  • Promote the protection of geological heritage.

Geolodía Fuerteventura 2026 is supported by:

  • The Cabildo’s Department of Environment and Hunting,
  • The Department of Animal Biology, Edaphology and Geology at the University of La Laguna,
  • The Cultural Chair “Telesforo Bravo” of the Vice‑Rectory for Culture and University Extension,
  • The Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities), and
  • The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, which co‑fund the event at the national level.
