Revitalizing historic buildings with the “Memoria Viva” employment plan
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura reports progress on the ‘Memoria Viva 2025’ employment scheme, which is dedicated to refurbishing a dozen heritage sites—including museums, cultural centres and other historic landmarks.
Press release
Seventeen workers employed under the Memoria Viva 2025 program have been improving heritage spaces across the island since the initiative began in November 2025. The team has already carried out conservation and rehabilitation work in more than a dozen sites, ranging from museums and cultural centres to other places of historic interest.
Today, Cabildo President Lola García and Employment Development Counselor Nuria Cabrera visited the Molino de la Corte to inspect ongoing conservation tasks. Workers have cleaned the interior, conserved wooden elements, repainted both the exterior and interior of the mill, and landscaped the surrounding area.
“We are at a moment when we must make an effort to show where we come from and to showcase this legacy, which is part of our island identity,” said President Lola García.
Counselor Nuria Cabrera emphasized the Cabildo’s commitment to active employment policies and thanked the coordination with Museos de Fuerteventura for implementing the program in museum sites. She also highlighted collaboration with municipal governments to work on other historic assets such as traditional houses, historic lime kilns and former schools.
The visit also included Museums of Fuerteventura counselor Rayco León and Antigua municipal heritage councilor Sandra Torres.

The scheme is co‑financed by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands through the Fondo de Desarrollo de Canarias (FDCAN). Since its launch, the program has carried out minor‑works projects at numerous heritage locations, including:
- Molino and La Molina de Tefía (Puerto del Rosario): cleaning, interior and exterior painting, and mast installation.
- Molino de El Roque (La Oliva).
- Cultural Heritage Complex of La Ampuyenta (Puerto del Rosario): restoration of the Casa de Fray Andresito, the Hospitalito, and the Casa Doctor Mena.
- Faro del Tostón.
- Molino de Villaverde.
- Cueva del Llano (La Oliva).
- Faro de la Entallada (Tuineje).
- Casa de Felipito el Feo.
- Interpretation Centre of the La Atalayita settlement (Antigua).
During March, additional works were completed at:
- Molino de los Llanos de la Concepción (Puerto del Rosario).
- Faro de la Entallada (Tuineje).
- Escuela Unitaria de Tesjuate – exterior cleaning, site adaptation and structural consolidation, carried out in coordination with the Puerto del Rosario City Council.
These interventions not only preserve the island’s cultural patrimony but also provide nearly twenty jobs, with an investment exceeding €472,000. The plan demonstrates how heritage conservation can be paired with active employment policies to benefit both the community and the historic environment.
