Reviving Traditions and Craftsmanship in Betancuria
Twenty residents of Betancuria have completed a palm‑weaving course, part of a collaboration agreement between the Cabildo’s Department of Handicraft and the municipal council to promote and disseminate traditional crafts.
The workshop, taught by palm‑weaving expert Ángel Nolasco, lasted thirty hours and took place in the localities of Vega de Río Palmas, Betancuria, and Valle de Santa Inés. The closing ceremony was attended by the island’s Councillor for Handicraft, Lolina Negrín, and councilor José Cerdeña.
“Initiatives like this are essential for protecting and spreading traditional artisan trades, rescuing ancestral techniques and ensuring that our cultural identity remains alive,” said Councillor Negrín.
Negrín highlighted the Cabildo’s ongoing support for the craft sector through the Strategic Plan for Grants to Promote and Disseminate Handicraft in Fuerteventura. In 2026 the plan provides:
- €200,000 in direct aid to artisans, the Creative Artisans Association of Fuerteventura, and related entities.
- €40,000 allocated to municipalities for developing similar initiatives.
- An additional competitive funding line open to associations, artisans, and craftspersons.
These resources aim to sustain and revitalize the island’s rich artisanal heritage.
