Rising Transport Costs Threaten Rural Areas and Families

The PSOE of Fuerteventura has focused on the impact that the current international context may have on the island’s economy, especially on the primary sector and household expenses, in a scenario marked by soaring fuel and transport prices.

To address this, José Cabrera, the PSOE’s Secretary for Municipal Policy and Food Sovereignty, held an institutional meeting with Juan Jesús Rodríguez Marichal, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Fuerteventura. The parties examined the island’s present economic situation and the medium‑term outlook for its business fabric.

During the meeting they discussed how higher fuel prices affect the cost of imported goods and the repercussions for an island that relies on maritime and air transport to supply raw materials, food and other necessities.

“The increase in air and sea transport costs impacts the prices of raw materials for the primary sector and food in the Canary Islands, and its effect is amplified in Fuerteventura because of its double insularity.”
— José Cabrera

The PSOE’s analysis centered on Fuerteventura’s most important productive sectors, employment trends, the cost of living, and the need to promote measures that ensure economic stability and sustainable growth.

The statement added that both the PSOE and the Chamber of Commerce agree on the importance of strengthening collaboration between public institutions and the business community, as well as maintaining dialogue spaces to address the local effects of a shifting international scenario.
