Santiago Travieso, Founder of Radio Sintonía and Historic Media Figure in F
Fuerteventura’s journalism community says goodbye today to Santiago Travieso, founder and director of Radio Sintonía, regarded as one of the most influential and charismatic voices in Majorcan communication, always working with his trademark “own criteria.”
Travieso leaves behind a career spanning several decades, deeply linked to radio and the development of media on the island. Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1955, he began his professional life at stations such as Radio Las Palmas‑Cadena SER and Radio Nacional de España before establishing himself in Fuerteventura, where he led a variety of radio and television projects.
In 1995 he founded Radio Sintonía, an independent local station that became an essential source of information for the island and celebrated its 30th anniversary last year. For many years he hosted the program “La Tertulia: Con Criterio Propio,” one of the most recognized radio spaces in Majorca.
“Today we say goodbye to Santiago… and we stand with the family of Radio Sintonía. We embrace Teresa, Iván, Yaiza and, of course, Marusa… as well as the rest of a team that continues to grow.”
“We bid you farewell forever, Santiago, with affection and respect. The Majorcan airwaves will never be the same without you.”
“I would like to close by recalling a piece I wrote for Diario de Fuerteventura when Santiago Travieso was appointed the herald of the Puerto del Rosario Carnival.”
With Santiago Travieso’s passing, Fuerteventura loses one of its greatest communication icons—a figure intimately tied to the recent history of radio and the growth of local journalism in the Canary Islands.
