Senate to

Gomera socialists demand special attention to islands with double insularity, overlooking Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa

The plenary of the Senate will debate this Tuesday an initiative from the Gomera Socialist Association (ASG) that urges the government to draft, as soon as possible, a specific plan for the Canary Islands with measures responding to the war in Iran, giving particular focus to the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

The motion – a non‑binding initiative – stems from a recent interpellation by ASG senator Fabián Chinea and the first vice‑president and Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, on the same issue. At that time, Cuerpo dismissed the prospect of additional specific proposals for the Canaries concerning the Iran war, as demanded by the ASG, although he defended the anti‑crisis measures already approved by the government, which included concrete proposals for the archipelago.

“The singularity of the Canary Economic and Fiscal Regime must not become a disadvantage in accessing the public support measures adopted at the state level,” the ASG states in its initiative.

The ASG’s proposal calls on the government to present, as quickly as possible, a plan that takes into account the economic, fiscal and territorial particularities derived from the Canary Islands’ status as an ultra‑peripheral region. Its key points are:

  • Compensatory mechanisms financed from the General State Budget to offset any disadvantage caused by the Canary Economic and Fiscal Regime.
  • Creation of a technical working group with a defined mandate and schedule to foster effective coordination between the Spanish Government and the Government of the Canary Islands, oriented to adopting measures adapted to the archipelago’s reality.
  • Inclusion in the design of economic and fiscal measures of specific attention to non‑capital islands, especially those suffering “double insularity” – La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.
  • A push for the government to implement a personal income‑tax (IRPF) credit for residents of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

The ASG hopes that this initiative will compel the central government to address the unique challenges faced by the smaller islands, which it argues have been overlooked in broader national responses to the conflict.
