Ship bound for the Canary Islands intercepted with 6,500 kg of cocaine

GEO agents boarded the vessel in an operation coordinated by the National Police and the U.S. DEA.

The National Police intercepted a merchant ship carrying 6,500 kilograms of cocaine in its holds, about 600 miles off the Canary Islands. The operation, led by the Special Anti‑Drug Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court and carried out with the collaboration of the Spanish Navy, was made possible by intelligence supplied by the U.S. DEA.

During the boarding, carried out by the Special Operations Group (GEO), the nine crew members of the vessel were arrested. In an initial inspection, agents discovered hidden structures and compartments that were not part of a typical cargo‑ship layout, where the narcotics were concealed.
