Signing to Resume Work on Zurita's Composting and Sorting Plant

The Canary Islands Government is injecting €17 million into the Cabildo. The signing of the replanning act reactivates the construction of the sorting and compost the Zurita Environmental Complex, aiming to achieve a 50 % recycling rate.

Press Release

The construction of the sorting and composting plant at the Zurita Environmental Complex has been resumed following the signing of the replanning act on Thursday at the Fuerteventura Cabildo headquarters.

“Finally, the works that depend on the Autonomous Community are being restarted, and they are essential for modernising Zurita and improving waste treatment in Fuerteventura,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura.

From the Cabildo:

“After a long period of demanding it, we have secured the Canary Islands Government’s commitment to launch the second phase of the works, ending years of delay.”

During the ceremony, Enrique Pérez, Councillor for Waste Management, added:This is another step in the Cabildo’s ongoing effort to improve waste treatment on Fuerteventura, the Canary island that has seen the greatest growth in recycling.”

He also highlighted the plant’s environmental impact:

“Beyond complying with regulations and the goals set out in the Island Waste Plan, this new facility will separate waste that currently ends up in the landfill. Coupled with rising public awareness, it will prevent roughly 50 % of waste from being landfilled, advancing Fuerteventura toward sustainability and a circular economy.”

The island’s governing corporation echoed the commitment:

“We continue to prioritise and invest in improving waste treatment on the island that has led recycling growth. Approximately €3 million is already contracted for modernising Zurita’s facilities, alongside the network of transfer stations across the island.”

Mariano Hernández Zapata, Councillor for Ecological Transition and Energy, remarked:

“Talking about the future of Fuerteventura means ensuring efficient waste management. After years of stoppages, we can finally say that Zurita will receive these much‑needed sorting and composting facilities.”

“Today marks the official start of these works, keeping us on track with the circular‑economy strategy roadmap.”

Project Overview

  • Total investment: €17 million, funded by the Canary Islands Government.
  • Scope: Construction of two complementary facilities:
    • Sorting plant: Separates and valorises recyclable materials that are not sorted at source.
    • Composting plant: Converts organic fractions into usable compost for agricultural, forestry, and landscaping purposes.
  • Current contracts: Approximately €3 million already allocated for modernising the Zurita installations and upgrading the island‑wide transfer stations.
  • Target: Enable the island to recycle 50 % of its waste and meet the 2026 recycling and circular‑economy objectives.

These installations are considered pivotal for achieving the island’s sustainability goals and will strengthen coordination among the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo, and municipal authorities.
