Six arrested and over 3,200 liters seized in Fuerteventura for fuel theft linked to drug trafficking
The Civil Guard has stepped up its operations against the so‑called “petaqueo” in Fuerteventura, a modus operandi that involves the illegal storage and supply of large quantities of fuel allegedly intended for vessels involved in high‑sea drug trafficking.
Operation on the Morro Jable Coast
The operation took place along the coastal area near Morro Jable, specifically on the stretch known as Playa de la Señora. Officers observed suspicious vehicle and pedestrian movements, suspecting the arrival of vessels with illicit purposes.
After setting up a surveillance team, the agents watched as, upon a boat’s arrival on the shore, two individuals attempted to hand over fuel canisters from land. One of the suspects was detained on the spot, while others initially fled by sea, abandoning numerous canisters on the beach.
The suspects were later located and arrested at the Morro Jable dock, where they were intercepted alongside the boat’s captain and another individual performing lookout duties. The Maritime Service of the Civil Guard also seized the vessel used.
In total, 157 canisters containing approximately 3,200 liters of fuel—considered prohibited material under Decree‑Law 16/2018—were confiscated.
Surge of “Petaqueo” in the Canary Islands
According to the Civil Guard’s assessment, this type of operation has surged in recent months. The irregularly stored and transported fuel is believed to be linked to high‑speed boats used for moving drugs from Africa or South America to the Iberian Peninsula.
“Petaqueo” is classified as an offense under Article 568 of the Penal Code for the possession and transport of unauthorized flammable substances, and it poses a serious risk to public safety. Storing large fuel quantities without proper safety measures endangers the perpetrators, the public, and the environment.
With this operation in Fuerteventura, the Civil Guard underscores its commitment to combating the logistical networks that support drug trafficking and to preventing the hazards associated with the illegal handling of highly flammable substances.
