Socialist Party backs artisanal fishing

Majorcan socialists appeal to the State to intervene for the sector

The Socialist Party has positioned itself in Fuerteventura hand‑in‑hand with the fishing sector to try to help find solutions in the face of the helplessness caused by the new European fishing regulations.

In doing so, they back the strike launched by the Canary guilds, which denounce Regulation (EU) 2023/2842 as “imposing absurd, dangerous and unworkable obligations, jeopardising the viability of the offshore and coastal fleet, maritime safety and common sense,” according to the guilds.

“Use all socialist force so that the Spanish state defends Canary fishermen before the European Union,” says José Cabrera, Secretary of Municipal Policy, Primary Sector, Food and Food Sovereignty for the PSOE of Fuerteventura.

Cabrera adds that Minister Torres has informed him that “a series of proposals have been made to the EU this very week,” previewing a meeting between the minister and the sector to explain what the government defends “in this sense and as an outermost region before the EU.”

“Both the sector and all Canary political forces must push in the only correct direction, which is none other than the progress and survival of Canary artisanal fishing,” the Majorcan leader asserts.
