Sport Deep-Sea Fishing Returns to Puerto del Rosario

The Silvestre de León Memorial Becomes the Most Important Event on the Canary Calendar

Sport offshore fishing is back in the island’s capital as part of the Rosario festivities. The XIX Silvestre de León Memorial will take place on October 3‑4, with the presentation ceremony scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday, October 2.

A total of 45 boats have registered for the event, arriving from Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and other ports on the island of Fuerteventura. Organisers are expecting fine weather and excellent fishing conditions.

The Puerto del Rosario tournament will allow participants to return only with túnidos (tuna) and dorados (mahi‑mahi). However, the competition is based on catch‑and‑release for all billfish species.

“It’s more than just catch‑and‑release; it’s photograph‑and‑release, so the species suffer as little as possible,” said Emilio Domínguez, the event’s organiser.

The festivities will kick off on Friday morning with a floral offering to Silvestre de León, marking the start of the memorial’s first day. The event is now a fixture on the Canary Islands’ sporting calendar.
