Canary Islands time Regional coastal alert declared for Fuerteventura
The Canary Islands Government declared a coastal alert across the islands, with Fuerteventura also covered by pre-alerts for rain, wind, thunderstorms and flooding. Bruna’s cold front was expected to cross the islands from west to east between Saturday and Sunday. The government said a separate disturbance of tropical origin could prolong unsettled weather into the following week and advised precautions near the coast and when travelling.

Gusts could exceed 50 km/h in northern and north-western Fuerteventura on Sunday. A later forecast mentioned drizzle and a possible localised downpour, with waves of up to three metres from the south-west. Harbours were not initially expected to face difficult conditions.
Monday and Tuesday could be calmer, followed by further rain on Wednesday, although the forecast remained provisional.

Strong south-south-westerly winds and rain were forecast for Sunday in Fuerteventura, with heavier showers and thunderstorms possible. Waves could reach three metres on the north and west coasts.
After a calmer Monday and Tuesday, an earlier outlook suggested widespread rain was highly likely on Wednesday. An accompanying AEMET notice concerned severe weather in western mainland Spain, not a confirmed warning for Fuerteventura.
Canary Islands time Possible Atlantic storm forecast from Sunday
A forecast published on 3 November suggested strong south-westerly winds, rain and thunderstorms could reach Fuerteventura from Sunday afternoon and perhaps continue until Wednesday. Background and full report
Storm Bruna is forecast to bring strong winds, rain and rougher seas to Fuerteventura on Sunday 8 November. The Canary Islands Government has declared a coastal alert for the island and pre-alerts for rain, wind, thunderstorms and flooding. AEMET has also issued yellow warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms, scheduled to run from noon to 11.59pm on Sunday.
A cold front associated with Bruna is expected to cross the Canary Islands from west to east between Saturday and Sunday. Forecasts remain uncertain, particularly about where thunderstorms will develop and how intense they will be.
Warnings and regional alerts
Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, forecasts a 40–70% probability of both heavy rain and thunderstorms during its Sunday warning period. Rain could reach 20mm in an hour. Regional emergency officials say Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa could receive intense rain of 20mm an hour or more, although it is not expected to persist as long as on the more mountainous islands.
AEMET’s yellow warnings are meteorological warnings for specified hazards and times. The Canary Islands Government’s alerts and pre-alerts are separate regional emergency declarations. Fuerteventura is covered by a coastal alert and pre-alerts for rain, wind, thunderstorms, and rain-related and coastal flooding. The previously announced rain and thunderstorm pre-alerts take effect at 9pm on Saturday 7 November; the AEMET warnings begin at noon on Sunday.
Wind, rain and sea conditions
The latest local outlook forecasts strong south-south-westerly winds on Sunday, particularly in the north and north-west of Fuerteventura, where gusts could exceed 50km/h. It describes drizzle and the possibility of a localised downpour. An earlier outlook indicated a high likelihood of rain across much of the island, with heavier showers and thunderstorms possible.
Waves of up to three metres are forecast locally as seas build through the weekend. The later outlook describes waves coming from the south-west and says the island’s harbours are not initially expected to face difficult conditions, although the storm’s development should be watched.
The regional coastal alert covers all the islands. Its warning of swell up to four metres on northern and western coasts, as well as the highest rain and wind figures in the regional forecast, applies to the archipelago as a whole rather than specifically to Fuerteventura.
The outlook beyond Sunday
Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November were expected to be relatively calm, with light winds changing direction. An earlier local forecast suggested another spell of widespread rain was highly likely on Wednesday 11 November, with moderate southerly winds, strong gusts and waves potentially exceeding three metres on Fuerteventura’s north and west coasts. That later-week outlook remains uncertain and is not a confirmed outcome.
Separately, the Canary Islands Government says a disturbance of tropical origin, distinct from Bruna, could prolong unsettled conditions into the following week. Check the latest Fuerteventura weather information and official updates as the systems develop.
Staying safe
Emergency officials advise staying away from piers, breakwaters and places exposed to waves, and postponing water activities and swimming at remote or unsupervised beaches. Check conditions before visiting the island’s beaches.
During heavy rain, reduce road journeys, use main roads where possible and avoid ravines, watercourses and flood-prone areas, even when they are normally dry. Secure plant pots and other loose objects on balconies, windows and rooftops; during thunderstorms, stay away from trees and metal structures.
