Storm Threatening the Islands Could Bring a “Monster” of Haze
Heavy rain on Thursday, but Friday and Saturday we will have a lot of dust in Fuerteventura.
Very unsettled weather is expected across Fuerteventura and the whole Canary archipelago as the week draws to a close. All indicators point to:
- Intense rain on Thursday with strong north winds and a high sea; waves could reach up to 5 m on the north‑eastern coasts of Fuerteventura.
- A low‑pressure system approaching from the northeast, driven by the polar jet, that will produce an effect not previously anticipated.
The low, rotating counter‑clockwise, will act like a vacuum, drawing a massive Saharan dust plume into the Canary Islands and mixing storms, wind, and rain. At this stage:
The probability of a very dense dust haze (calima) on Friday afternoon and Saturday is extremely high.
It is still uncertain whether the densest part of the dust plume will strike the islands, but it is likely to be the strongest event of the past few months.
