Storm wreaks havoc on Tarajalejo Avenue, one of the hardest‑hit areas by Therese

The two‑o’clock hour of the morning, the most feared moment along the Tuineje coast, was marked by the expected high‑tide peak accompanied by massive waves. The focus was especially on Giniginamar, where this type of weather phenomenon usually causes damage and where residents spent a very anxious night watching the storm’s advance across Fuerteventura.

Despite the forecasts, the greatest impact was felt in Tarajalejo, where the waves caused extensive damage, especially on the avenue. Councilor Miguel Andújar explained to La Voz de Fuerteventura:

“The storm has stripped the lower part of the avenue and has sunk a stretch of about 70 to 80 metres,” he emphasized.

The storm also hit Las Playitas hard, where the boardwalk could not withstand the sea’s onslaught. The aluminium structure broke and numerous adjacent slabs were lifted.

Mayor of Tuineje, David Herrera, and the Councilor for Works and Services, Miguel Andújar, walked the coastline this morning from the early hours to assess the damage. President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, also joined them to analyze the situation and plan measures while awaiting the storm’s evolution.

For now, crews are working to restore the municipality as much as possible. In Giniginamar, the many stones washed ashore by the storm have been cleared, and work continues at other points. Preventive actions, cordoning, and fencing are also being carried out until the storm passes.

The authorities are taking stock and studying actions to be implemented as soon as possible, “whether through emergency measures or whatever approach we must take,” Andújar concluded.
