Strong calima intrusion set to dominate Wednesday afternoon

Everything points to clear skies and a beach day on Holy Thursday

A massive intrusion of suspended dust—known locally as calima—is the main weather story for Fuerteventura and the entire Canary Islands today. Light easterly winds and the influence of the Saharan ridge have turned the island into an extension of the desert.

  • The dust plume will linger over Fuerteventura for only about 36 hours, extending a bit longer over the central islands.
  • By Wednesday afternoon, northeast winds will arrive and push the plume southward.

For the rest of Holy Week, we can expect clear skies, light northeast winds, and rising temperatures. Starting Thursday, sea conditions will improve, with waves reaching a maximum of 1.5 m along the north and west coasts.

Safety note: Swimmers should exercise caution across the island, as sea temperature will already be around 15 °C in some areas.
