Sustainable, Eco-friendly Lighting in Cofete
Fuerteventura Island Council Awards the “Starlight Lighting in Cofete” Project and Expands to 15 Luminaires
The Alumbrado Starlight en Cofete project has been awarded, increasing the number of light points from eleven to fifteen and replacing traditional fixtures with autonomous, sustainable luminaires that are friendly to birds and the night sky. In other words, Fuerteventura is upgrading iconic infrastructure and landscapes—symbols for the island’s residents—using tourism‑related funds from the EU Next Generation programme under the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD). The initiative is part of the “Fuerte por Naturaleza” program.
The contracting board of the Island Council awarded the project this week on behalf of the Tourism Department. The contract went to JRM 3.0 S.L., a locally owned company.
“It is essential to promote the protection of the quality of the Majorero night sky, which has great scientific, astronomical and natural value,” said Lola García, President of the Island Council.
The intervention aligns with the Council’s commitment to sustainable tourism, aiming to preserve the landscape integration of lighting while reducing light pollution.
Marlene Figueroa, the Council’s Tourism Minister, defended the project and highlighted the importance of a tourism policy that “reinvests in the destination” as part of the department’s strategy.
“Tourism management, as we understand it and are developing it, involves generating wealth to reinvest it on the island, so that Fuerteventura, its local economies and its people have direct access to the benefits produced by the sector,” she explained. “This can be through employment, service provision, supply of goods, or the enjoyment of investments that improve the island’s infrastructure and landscapes.”
Cofete is one of the most iconic sites on Fuerteventura, representing the island’s untamed nature coexisting with human presence. The Starlight Lighting project will install new, night‑sky‑friendly illumination and increase the number of light points from eleven to fifteen.
Key milestones of the project include:
- Energy‑efficiency improvements through a photovoltaic public lighting system, meeting the highest sustainability standards.
- Replacement of obsolete, salt‑corroded fixtures with durable, autonomous solutions that respect the environment.
The Council’s intervention aims to enhance safety, quality and comfort in the area while preserving its landscape integration in harmony with the environmental protection designations that Cofete enjoys.
