Sustainable SOS Fuerteventura reports constant road delays between the airport and Caleta de Fuste
The citizen collective SOS Fuerteventura sustainable has denounced the constant traffic hold‑ups on the road that connects Puerto del Rosario with the airport and Caleta de Fuste, a situation that, according to them, recurs especially during peak hours and is causing discomfort among residents and visitors.
In a statement posted on social media, the platform warns that traffic on the stretch between the airport crossing and the El Matorral roundabout has become a habitual congestion point, making entry and exit from the island’s capital difficult and affecting the daily mobility of those traveling through this area.
SOS Fuerteventura sustainable says that the increase in the number of vehicles on the road, combined with the lack of road infrastructure adapted to current demand, is causing frequent collapses on this segment of the island’s network. According to the collective, this situation reflects the limitations of roads they consider “insufficient” for the traffic volume the island currently supports.
The collective also points out that investments in road infrastructure planned by the Government of the Canary Islands, such as the development of a highway on this axis, have accumulated prolonged delays, which in their view aggravates the mobility problem. They further criticize that works being carried out on other sections of the island’s network, such as between Las Salinas and El Barranco de la Torre, are prolonged for long periods without an immediate improvement in traffic flow.
Facing this situation, SOS Fuerteventura sustainable has requested the Cabildo of Fuerteventura to launch an urgent action plan that would alleviate traffic congestion between the airport and Caleta de Fuste in both directions, at least provisionally while the planned road infrastructure is being executed.
The collective considers that improving mobility on this corridor is key both for the quality of life of the resident population and for the image of the tourist destination, as it is one of the main access routes to the capital and several of the island’s most important tourist zones.
