Temperatures Hit 38°C 2 PM
Authorities continue urging great caution to pilgrims heading to La Vega from across the island
The mercury surged in Fuerteventura at 14:00, with temperatures hovering around 38 °C in the central zones of the island. Across most of the island, readings exceeded 35 °C, and officials expect the heat to keep rising at least until 16:30.
“The heat wave is intensifying, and the dust haze is adding to the feeling of suffocation,” officials warned.
Precautionary advice
- Infants and elderly people should stay in cool, shaded areas and stay well‑hydrated.
- All pilgrims traveling to the Vega del Río Palmas to visit the Virgen de la Peña are urged to exercise extreme caution.
- The general population should also take protective measures, as the calima (dust haze) amplifies the sensation of suffocation.
Residents are reminded that Fuerteventura is currently under an orange alert for temperatures issued by AEMET and under a maximum‑temperature alert from the Government of the Canary Islands.
