The Importance of Emergency Plans in Fuerteventura

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Department of Security and Emergencies, is continuing work on the Municipal Emergency Plans (PEMU) for the municipalities of Antigua, Betancuria, and Tuineje. The department’s minister, Lolina Negrín, held a working meeting yesterday with municipal representatives and technicians from the public company GESPLAN to monitor the island corporation’s mandate to draft these plans.

During the meeting, participants reviewed the current drafting status and discussed the administrative procedures required to have the plans approved by the various governing bodies. This step precedes the submission of the plans to the Canary Islands Autonomous Commission for Civil Protection and Emergency Response for final approval.

“Having a robust planning tool is essential for both prevention and the coordinated management of any emergencies that may arise on the island,” Lolina Negrín emphasized, alongside the municipal political leaders present.

Municipal Emergency Plans serve as the fundamental response instrument for local risk situations. They are integrated into the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA), enabling an effective coordination of municipal, island, and regional resources.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the island’s civil protection and emergency system, ensuring that every municipality on the island has up‑to‑date, officially approved planning instruments.
