The mountaineer from Fuerteventura Mandy Placeres begins his ascent to Golden Peak
The Fuerteventura alpinist Armando Marco Placeres Espinel, known as Mandy, has begun a new adventure in Pakistan, with the goal of ascending the Golden Peak, or Spantik in the local language, at 7,027 meters, one of the peaks in the Karakoram range.
In his farewell to the mountain, the organizing company, K2 Base Camp Treks, dedicated a message on Instagram to the island mountaineer, giving “a warm welcome to our incredible Spanish climbers,” especially to Mandy, who is facing his first expedition in Pakistan and making his debut on the legendary Golden Peak.
Thus, the Spantik Peak Expedition 2025 has begun, departing from the Skardu valley, heading to the Arandu valley, the access point to the base camp. “Each expedition is more than a climb, it’s a journey of heart, endurance, and dreams. May this adventure bring achievements, transformation, and a safe return for each team member,” led by local guide Kumail Askole.
Antigua, on the Path to the Summit of the World
Although the Golden Peak is not one of the “eight-thousanders” of the Karakoram, the Antigua City Council announced that the alpinist might later attempt to ascend Gasherbrum I (8,070 meters).
The council wished the athlete luck before his departure, when Mandy Espinel visited the Antigua City Hall to present himself as an international climber, and to request a flag of the municipality to accompany him on this adventure.
The mayor, Matías Peña, and the councilor for Sports, Samuel Torres, highlighted the athlete’s humility, who according to the council’s statement, “was reluctant to share his achievements out of modesty, although his track record impressed local authorities.”
Antigua bid farewell to alpinist Mandy Marco Placeres.
“I am from Antigua and I am a Canarian, and I want the world to know and to locate my home, my homeland, of which I feel proud,” expressed Mandy Placeres, upon receiving the flag that he has taken with him to the Karakoram. The climber said goodbye to the municipality two days before beginning his journey to Pakistan, physically and mentally prepared for this challenge.
The Antigua City Council also mentioned that Mandy Espinel has learned of the tragic news of the death of two female climbers with whom he shared base camps on previous expeditions, which adds emotional difficulty to an already demanding journey. Despite this, he remains committed to completing the expedition and sharing an image with the flag of Antigua from the summit.
“If I manage to reach the summit, I will show the flag and send the people of Antigua an image of that moment,” noted the alpinist, who has also shown himself willing to share his story upon his return. “It’s not about talking about myself, but about demonstrating that there are many different summits to reach, and that all begin with a first step.”
