They Are the Heart of Carnival: Honoring the Queens at Thursday’s Morro Jable Proclamation

Morro Jable will host the kickoff of the Pájara Carnival on Thursday, March 12, at 8 p.m. The opening speech, part of the Women’s Programme, is titled “They, the Heart of the Carnival.” It will highlight the role of the child, adult and “Grand Dame” queens throughout the history of the municipality of Pájara.

The event is organized by the Concejalía de Festejos, led by Juan José Viera, in collaboration with the Concejalía de Servicios Sociales, headed by Kathaisa Rodríguez. Together they aim to honor women through the municipality’s history, culture and carnival tradition.

“This initiative seeks to recognize the queens and everything that makes up the carnival—murgas, comparsas, associations, seamstresses, and other figures. In short, all those people who have made this celebration great over the years, because without them there would be no queens or aspirants presenting themselves year after year,” said Kathaisa Rodríguez, councilor for Social Services.

“It is a tribute to the importance of women in the festivity and to the history of Pájara itself. As a councilor, I hope people come to enjoy tender and beautiful moments,” Rodríguez added.

The council invites all citizens to attend the inaugural ceremony and to take part in the various activities planned for Carnaval de Pájara 2026, promising another year of music, colour and community spirit throughout the municipality.
