title.Majorero Fresh Cheese Gains Ground in Canary Islands’ Large Retail Chains
.
Mercadona sold 5 million units of fresh Canary cheese in 2025, a 20 % increase over the previous year.
The company explained in a press release that this growth stems from its commitment to the sector in the Canary Islands. The cheeses it markets are produced by four local specialist suppliers: SAT Número 8275 (named Queso Flor Valsequillo), Quesería El Faro S.L., Quesos San Mateo, and Grupo Ganaderos de Fuerteventura S.L.
The firm stresses that this stable collaboration “contributes to guaranteeing the sector’s viability, boosting the local economy and creating value” in the Canary agri‑food chain. Currently, Mercadona offers six varieties of fresh Canary cheese, covering the different needs of its “Jefes” (the internal name for its customers):
- Cow milk
- Goat milk
- Cow/goat blend
- Smoked goat
- Lactose‑free cow
- Light‑fat cow
This range adapts to various tastes and culinary uses, “always with a clear focus on quality, flavor and freshness.” The company also highlights that fresh Canary cheese has become one of the “best‑valued” references among its Jefes for its taste, texture and proximity, prompting Mercadona to keep strengthening its commitment to the product.
Co‑Innovation Centers
Mercadona operates 20 co‑innovation centers, two of them located in the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria and Tenerife). In these hubs, Jefes share their experiences to develop products that meet their needs with “great quality at unbeatable prices.”
The model adjusts formats, recipes and presentations of fresh Canary cheese to better respond to customer expectations. In 2024, Mercadona’s purchases from Canary suppliers amounted to €694 million, an 11 % rise compared with 2023, reinforcing its support for the local productive fabric and fostering long‑term projects across the archipelago.
The retailer also collaborates with more than 100 product suppliers and 600 non‑commercial and service providers on the islands. This extensive network enables a broad, competitive assortment, with fresh Canary cheese standing out as a proximity product with high turnover.
Mercadona underscores its commitment to quality in every decision, including the selection of product suppliers, which “translates into a firm bet on the Spanish primary sector, giving preference to fresh national‑origin products.”
The company continues to strengthen ties with strategic Spanish agri‑food sectors—agriculture, livestock and fisheries—“reinforcing shared growth, stability, planning, future projection, purchase security and specialization.”
In the case of fresh Canary cheese, this approach results in products made with local milk, strict food‑safety controls and continuous monitoring of customer satisfaction.
