Toñi Fernández hopes Playa Blanca works start in September, saying the site is in a deplorable state

The councilor explained in an interview on the program La Voz de Fuerteventura on Radio Insular that the project is already in the procurement phase “to shape it and launch the tender”. Before that, it must clear the European procedure and then be published on the State Procurement portal. From that point, if the tender is not declared void, the municipality expects to begin the works after the summer.

“It is in a lamentable situation.”

The intervention is vital because the condition of this living dune “is alarming”, she emphasized, stressing that a complete regeneration—from the subsoil through infrastructure and all stages—is required.

Project Scope and Investment

  • Total budget: €500,000.
  • Affected stretch: From Punta Bikini to the southern area of the Parador, near Hotel El Mirador.
  • Key works:
    • Cleaning the subsoil.
    • Removing obsolete cabling.
    • Properly burying water‑supply and electricity installations.
    • Renovating basic beach services.
    • Installing new beach‑bar modules, toilets, changing rooms, terraces, continuous walkways, a lifeguard area, and two sports modules.

Fernández stressed that this is an integral renewal that will respect Playa Blanca’s characteristics—a living beach exposed to wind and constant sand movement.

Accessibility

Accessibility is another pillar of the project. The councilor assured that the plan includes:

  • Adapted showers.
  • Benches and accessible facilities.
  • A beach‑bar with a bathroom for people with reduced mobility.

“Universal accessibility and the ability for everyone to enjoy our beaches are being implemented on every beach where I am working,” she highlighted.

Economic Impact of Delays

The delay in the Costas authorization also had financial repercussions. Fernández explained that the municipality had to return €40,000 of funding from the Cabildo because the project could not be executed on time. That amount was part of the overall €500,000 operation, which, according to her, has been incorporated into the 2026 budget due to an existing municipal commitment.

Timeline

Once the contract is awarded, the execution period will be about six months. Fernández estimates that if works start in September, Playa Blanca could be fully completed between March and April 2027. She warned, however, that the modules must be custom‑made because Costas has demanded specific dimensions, which could cause some delay.

Future Management of Beach Uses

The municipality is also preparing the tender documents to license the beach‑bar and the two sports modules. Regarding surf schools, Fernández reminded that Playa Blanca flies the Blue Flag and that authorized companies pay a fee to operate.

She acknowledged ongoing tension between authorized schools and unlicensed operators:

“That war continues unchanged,” she admitted, referring to complaints from those who do pay the fee and demand control over the beach’s sporting use.

Rescue Service Updates

Fernández also reported on new developments in the rescue and lifeguard service, which began last Thursday after a fresh tender awarded the contract to Activa Canarias. The company proposed higher wages for lifeguards—a demand from the sector that, lacking its own collective agreement, urges administrations to include bonuses and supplements in tenders to improve economic conditions, generally based on the minimum wage baseline.

Congratulations to Local Athletes

Toñi Fernández Aragón also took the opportunity to congratulate local swimmer and Port of Rosario native Edu Blasco, who, together with his team, was again crowned Spanish champion in rescue and lifeguarding relay and announced his participation in the upcoming World Championships in South Africa.
