Toño Fránquiz Becomes the New Face of the PP in Antigua

He will lead the party organization with Joana Verde as secretary

The Popular Party (PP) of Antigua announced the appointment of Juan Antonio Fránquiz, better known as Toño Fránquiz, as the new president of the party’s local branch, with Joana Verde—currently a PP councilor in the municipality—named secretary. The change “aims to revitalize the PP’s local structure, strengthen its work in the municipality and tackle the challenges facing Antigua, a key driver of Fuerteventura’s economy,” the party said.

“Fránquiz and Verde are two people deeply committed to their community, linked to both social movements and sports initiatives. With a clear vision for the future and a decisive commitment, they are ready to lead a renewal that guarantees the well‑being of Antigua’s citizens and combats the abandonment many of its villages and the tourist zone are suffering,” the party explained in a release.

“This leadership change responds to the need to give a new direction to local politics in a municipality that, despite its economic importance, is hampered by the duality of posts within the governing group and the constant clashes among the political formations that compose it. As PP officials point out, this situation is generating unnecessary expenses for the public treasury and affecting the management of municipal resources.”

Renewal and Unity in the Opposition

The Executive Committee and the Island Board of the PP of Fuerteventura, chaired by Jessica de León, have decided to step forward with the goal of renewing the party’s structure and strengthening its work in opposition.

“It is time to be a real, constructive alternative for Antigua. We know citizens demand solutions, not unnecessary confrontations that only benefit a few. We said we would open the party to participation and renewal, anchor it in the municipalities, and that is what we are doing—reinforcing teams and giving committees the freedom to defend the general interest of their neighbors and shape solid alternatives aimed at earning their trust,” said the PP president in Fuerteventura.

“Toño and Joana represent the necessary change, the renewal that Antigua needs to move forward and overcome the challenges it faces, especially in the tourism and social sectors,” added de León.
