Torres says the Canary Islands could pursue an airport deal like the Basque Country's

The State has approved with Euskadi a bilateral body with equal representation, giving the autonomous government greater capacity.

Spain’s Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, announced that the Canary Islands government can pursue an airport agreement similar to the one established with the Basque Country.

He clarified that what the State has approved with Euskadi “is not co‑management of the airports, but a bilateral body with equal representation in which the autonomous government has greater capacity.”

“Canary Islands can certainly aim for that. Negotiations have been requested to start and we will have the first technical meetings in the coming weeks, which is the process carried out with everyone who requests specific actions,” Torres told Radio Canaria, as reported by Europa Press.

Torres also stressed that it is “not true” that any co‑management of airports has been approved with any autonomous community.

“The Spanish Government sits at a table with the autonomous governments respecting the Constitution, the Statutes of Autonomy of each region and, of course, everything that relates to the basic state law,” he concluded.
