Tourism Minister Guarantees Funding for World Windsurf and Wingfoil Championships

“The Board of Trustees, with participation from Pájara, approved in December 2025 to finance the events of the second half of 2026 via a credit amendment.”

Marlene Figueroa, the Tourism Counselor of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and Vice‑President of the Tourism Board, has confirmed that the 2026 Windsurf and Wingfoil World Championship will receive its full allocation.

The Board of Trustees of the Tourism Board met on 16 December 2025, with the island’s municipalities—including Pájara—present. They agreed to maintain the amounts earmarked for municipal subsidies in 2026, while adjusting the budgeting strategy to comply with new regulatory requirements.

As Cabildo President Lola García previously noted on Fuerteventura Televisión, the budgetary resources for the event are secured. “The budget is a living document; we continuously incorporate the necessary credits, and the annual aid that enables this and other events is guaranteed,” she said.

Figueroa explained: “The subsidy lines assigned to the municipalities remain unchanged, providing a fiscal solution for 2026 so that no municipality loses its financing capacity for tourism‑significant events.”

According to Figueroa, the Board members were briefed on a proposal from the Tourism Board that would keep the nominated subsidies for municipalities hosting first‑semester 2026 tourism events, and then extend the same level of funding to second‑semester events through a credit amendment.

The Board, which includes all Fuerteventura municipalities such as Pájara, accepted the plan. “The mayor of Pájara was informed that the €250,000 subsidy for the Windsurf and Wingfoil World Championship will not be lost. On the contrary, subsidies for all municipalities are being maintained,” added Marlene Figueroa.
