Tourism Ministry Flags 900 Illegal Vacation Homes in Fuerteventura

“The political blindness of Jessica de León has worsened the housing problem in Fuerteventura.”

The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura praises the work of the Ministry of Housing, which has just uncovered 934 illegal holiday homes on the island. This irregularity directly impacts the availability and price of rental housing in Fuerteventura, leaving many resident families without a home.

Manuel Hernández, PSOE deputy for Fuerteventura, states:

“There is a problem of ‘political blindness’ in the Tourism Department regarding the disappearance of housing from the rental market and the resulting irrational price surge. This blindness, represented by Councillor Jéssica de León, has aggravated the housing crisis in Fuerteventura through irresponsible management of short‑term rental regulation.”

Where the Illegal Properties Are Concentrated

  • La Oliva – 484 illegal units (fourth highest in the Canary Islands)
  • Antigua – 216 illegal units
  • Pájara – 116 illegal units
  • Tuineje – 60 illegal units
  • Puerto del Rosario – 58 illegal units

National Context and Immediate Action

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda (MIVAU) has notified major digital platforms about 8,698 illegal tourist apartments across the Canary Islands, of which 934 are located on Fuerteventura. The ministry has demanded the immediate removal of these listings from online platforms to pull them out of the tourist market.

Manuel Hernández adds that the order to delete the advertisements “is a concrete, effective, and real measure,” especially when contrasted with the uncertainty surrounding the Canary Islands Government’s (CC‑PP) housing policy.

“We don’t know what they are doing, if they are doing anything at all, because even such obvious steps as exposing illegal rentals—simply by checking their legality—have been taken by the Ministry from Madrid.”
