Tractors gear up Tiscamanita’s gavia beans for planting

Coordinated action between the Cabildo and the Town Hall allows responding to about twenty residents’ requests.

Tiscamanita is preparing to germinate. The agricultural tractors of the Cabildo’s Department of Works and Machinery and the Tuineje Town Hall’s Machinery Department began today to ready their gavias for planting. The initiative aligns with the concepts of food sovereignty, the conservation of traditional landscapes, and water capture to replenish aquifers.

“A treasure we must preserve.” – Lola García, President of the Cabildo, emphasizing the collaboration between institutions that is improving Fuerteventura’s agricultural landscape.

“Public managers fulfill their role when they respond to citizens’ needs, and the best way to do so is to coordinate and combine the limited resources of administrations to multiply their effect on the demands of neighbors.” – Blas Acosta, Councillor for Works and Machinery of the Cabildo.

“The agricultural and livestock activity of the municipality, thanks to the tenacity and consistency of its residents, with the support of administrations as in this case, are able to keep the gavias operational and produce zero‑kilometer food.” – Jonathan Peña, Councillor for Primary Sector and Machinery of the Tuineje Town Hall.

This morning, the agricultural tractors of the Cabildo and the Town Hall, together with their staff, began repairing ditches and preparing the soils of Tiscamanita’s gavias for cultivation. Planned actions include removing weeds, cleaning and burning the gavias, and manuring the cultivation areas to boost fertility.

Through this joint effort, the gavias of roughly twenty requesting residents are being restored and beautified, achieving a triple objective: facilitating cultivation on fertile land, replenishing aquifers, and restoring the characteristic landscapes of Fuerteventura.
