Traditional Craftsmanship Is a Cultural Strength
The initiative is part of the “Fuerte por Naturaleza” program of the Tourism Department, in agreement with the Chamber of Commerce and with the collaboration of the Island Handicraft Area.
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is successfully running traditional handicraft workshops in Tiscamanita and Tindaya. These workshops belong to the “Fuerte por Naturaleza” program of the Tourism Department, thanks to the agreement with the Chamber of Commerce and coordinated with the Island Handicraft Area.
The sessions are taught by artisan Ángel Nolasco and focus on two disciplines:
- Palm weaving – held in Tiscamanita.
- Traditional hat‑making – held in Tindaya.
The workshops run from September to December, reaffirming the island corporation’s commitment to disseminating artisanal practices that form part of Fuerteventura’s cultural and intangible heritage.
Both specialties offer introductory levels, with an advanced level available for hat‑making, allowing participants of different backgrounds to engage with these crafts.
Tourism Councilor Marlene Figueroa and Handicraft Councilor Lolina Negrín visited the workshops, highlighting the strong interest of Fuerteventura’s residents in experiencing these traditions firsthand and demonstrating that artisanal craftsmanship has a vibrant place on the island.
This initiative positions the Cabildo of Fuerteventura as a reference point for the recovery, diffusion, and preservation of knowledge linked to the island’s artisanal trades.
The workshops are funded by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds.
