Tragic day on Tenerife's coast leaves 3 dead, 15 injured

A woman dies in Puerto de la Cruz, a man suffers the same fate in La Guancha, and the body of a man is found floating in El Médano.

In a day when the Canary Islands were on pre‑alert for adverse coastal conditions, the sea claimed three lives in Tenerife. Fifteen other people were injured in several separate incidents.

  • Six French tourists were swept into the sea at Roque de Las Bodegas beach in Taganana after a sudden wave.
  • A medical helicopter transferred a woman with moderate injuries to the helipad of Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. The remaining victims suffered minor injuries; however, four required hospitalization and a fifth was treated on site. Authorities noted that the victims ignored a preventive buoy placed in the area.

At 14:02, emergency services reported the discovery of a body floating off El Cabezo beach in Granadilla de Abona. Lifeguards from the Beach Rescue Service found the man in cardiopulmonary arrest and began CPR. Advanced resuscitation efforts by the SUC team were unsuccessful, confirming his death.

At 15:00, a wave hit the pier at Puerto de la Cruz, dragging ten people into the water. Local police and bystanders rescued the victims. Security personnel found a woman in cardiopulmonary arrest and started resuscitation.

The SUC dispatched five ambulances; advanced CPR attempts failed, confirming her death. Three other victims sustained serious trauma, four had moderate injuries, and two suffered minor injuries; all were hospitalized in various health centers. Maritime Rescue resources and National Police officers also assisted in the operation.

At 16:42, the Civil Protection Center (Cecoes) received an alert about a person who had fallen into the sea at Charco del Viento. Rescue helicopters from the GES retrieved the individual and flew him to the helipad at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Once on land, SUC personnel confirmed his death.
