Upgrades to EV charging in Fuerteventura
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Department of Industry, is investing €213,570.17 to modernize the island‑wide network of electric‑vehicle (EV) charging stations across all municipalities. As part of this project, the island corporation put four new 22 kW charging points into service on Monday, bringing the public network to a total of 16 active stations.
The new 22 kW chargers can charge two vehicles simultaneously and are located at:
- Valle de Santa Inés and Vega de Río Palmas (municipality of Betancuria)
- Antonio Espinosa Street, Puerto del Rosario
- Laural Street, Morro Jable (Pájara)
“The installation of these public charging points represents a significant advance for sustainable mobility on the island, reinforcing our commitment to the energy transition in Fuerteventura through modernised charging infrastructure, reducing carbon footprints and promoting a cleaner, more efficient mobility model,” said island president Lola García.
Industry councilor Lolina Negrín added that the additions expand Fuerteventura’s sustainable‑mobility infrastructure, which now comprises 16 operational points:
- 5 fast‑charging stations (50 kW) in Corralejo, Puerto del Rosario, Gran Tarajal, Betancuria, and Morro Jable.
- 2 standard stations (10 kW) in Caleta de Fuste and Costa Calma.
- 9 stations (22 kW) distributed across Corralejo, Lajares, La Oliva, Puerto del Rosario, Pájara, plus the four new points activated today in Betancuria, Puerto del Rosario, and Morro Jable.
Negrín highlighted that the overall modernization project, funded with EU Next Generation EU resources, totals €213,570.17.
“The deployment of electric vehicles is a real alternative to fossil fuels and an essential step toward achieving Fuerteventura’s decarbonisation targets. This commitment to clean energy in transport not only mitigates environmental impacts and reduces energy consumption, but also encourages citizens to adopt a mobility model that directly protects our natural environment,” she emphasized.
The island corporation will continue working in the coming days to activate the remaining stations needed to complete the public network. Planned future installations include:
- 4 fast chargers (50 kW) at La Lajita, Antigua, Tuineje, and Pájara.
- 5 additional 22 kW chargers in Gran Tarajal, Antigua, and Puerto del Rosario.
